Thea Kristiina Aaltonen (67), beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter, passed away on April 26, 2026.
Born January 27, 1959, in Kuopio, Finland. Thea carried her Finnish roots with quiet strength, resilience, and just the right amount of stubbornness. Thea eventually made her home in 1984 when she moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, where she lived out the rest of her 42 years—long enough to know everyone, everything, and probably a few things no one else did.
Thea had a gift that could not be taught: she was hands-down funny. Not try-hard funny, not rehearsed, just naturally, perfectly, and unexpectedly funny. The kind of humor that would catch you off guard and leave you laughing long after she’d moved on to the next thing. She will be remembered for her warm comforting hugs and her uncanny gift of making everyone around her feel loved and welcomed. She made life lighter for everyone who surrounded her.
She is survived by her beautiful daughter Erin, son-in-law Derek, and her grandchildren Anneli, Robert, and Blake. AND (as she would say, most importantly) her great-grandson, Malcolm. They brought her deep, unwavering joy. To know her was to know her love for them. Sisters Anu, Susu, and her dear mother Anneli. As well as her bonus siblings, Mike, Kat, and Tina.
Wherever she is now, we find peace knowing there was one heck of a welcoming party for her, including her father Jorma, brother Harri, and some of the best friends that could be had (Jean, Darrell, and Joan). We know she’s patiently, probably not so patiently, awaiting Sam Elliott’s arrival at her party.
Thea’s legacy is not only in her family, but in the laughter she leaves behind—the kind that echoes in memories, in stories retold, and in the quiet moments where you can almost hear her voice delivering one more perfectly timed line, followed by her endearing laugh.
She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever quoted.
Her family shares this final message:
Minä rakastan sinua
We will miss you so very much.
The family is having a celebration of life at her home this summer. Contact Derek Carpenter for the date and time.
