Dorothy Jean Fail Nelson, born December 23, 1946, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, passed away on August 18, 2026, in Nampa, Idaho, after a two-year struggle with cancer. She was 79 years old.

She was the oldest of three daughters born to Bobbie Joe and Agnes Marie Olson Fail.

Dorothy spent her whole life dedicated to caring for others as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Las Vegas, Nevada, Nampa, and Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

She married Stan Nelson and they enjoyed their time together in Las Vegas for ten years before divorcing. When she married Stan, she was unable to have children of her own, but through him she gained stepchildren and grandchildren whom she dearly loved.

She had a gift for caring for and listening to others. She enjoyed a good party, shopping, looking through secondhand stores, driving around looking at new places, loving on her dogs and horses, and participated in parades with her horses. She was very active in the Eagles and was especially proud that she was chosen as Queen on year. She was also very skilled at the craft of counted cross-stitch, and produced any beautiful pictures.

Dorothy spent many hours on the phone with her sister, Phyllis Fout, when they were not living in the same area. They traveled well together, experienced new places and had the chance to connect with cousins they had not met or had not grown up close to.

Dorothy was most proud of her nieces and nephews, and she enjoyed time spent with cousins and their children. She never wanted to miss a birthday party or celebration with them.

Four years ago, Dorothy met her partner, Darrell Kucera, and they spent every hour possible together. They spent many hours shopping for antiques, learning to cook together, and exploring Nampa together. She was able to drive Darrel around Nampa, since he did not know the town well. She could find and drive to almost anywhere he wanted to go.

Dorothy cared for Darrell as he struggled with cancer, taking him to appointments and supporting him through treatment until he went into remission. Not long after, Dorothy was diagnosed with cancer herself. Darrell was by her side constantly throughout her illness, just as she had been by her side.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, sister Barbara Whittaker, and nephew Joshua Foust.

She is survived by her partner, Darrell Kucera; sister Phyllis (David) Foust of Bonners Ferry; niece Tamara Foust (Matthew) Brink and their family of O’ahu, Hawaii; nephews Michael (Shawna) Hittle and their family, and Scott (Angela) Hittle and their family, also of Bonners Ferry; niece Stephanie Whittaker (John) Tucker and their family of Merritt Island, Florida; plus many great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
